Starting the new year I would like to refer to today's topic. I see a lot of people who deal with recordings in their own home studio and with mixing that they spend a lot of their time and energy looking for the best hardware and plug ins ,which of them are the best ,so they can have better sounding results
I would like to discuss this issue today because it is something that concerns many people and in fact I often get this question "How can I become better in my home studio?" Seriously, if you start looking for the answer in hardware or in any plug in, that will help you evolve in your mix and have an amazing result, ,then my friend let me tell you ,that you are wrong!.
Yes, plug ins and some hardware (if you can afford it) ,may help you ,but they don’t do the work for you! The most important step you have to take , so you can become better and better each day is this! Finish your projects and move on to the next one! I think you know what I am talking about,don’t you?
I am very sure that you have so many song ideas in your computer ,some of them are just ideas and some of them are left in the middle of the process ,because you are not sure what to do next! The majority of us do something amazing! We work on a song and even though we have accomplished a very good mix so far ,we feel that something is missing and we never take the next step to export our song and say “Ready!”
You just saw a video on YouTube for a mixing technique ,and you think that is perfect for the specific vocal track.What do you do? You just open your project and you decide to spend some hours again ,so you can get a better result and the hours turn to days and without knowing you have spent months on this song and nothing gets better!
Do you know why? Your ears are “tired” and I don’t mean from many hours in one day. I mean generally tired of this song.You have tried so many things and you just don’t know what is the best for this song anymore! And this where you are wrong!
You have to finish your song and move on to the next one! You can’t improve your mixing skills by staying and working on one project.Each song is a new challenge ,you have to be creative in a different way ,so you can apply all this knowledge you gain from blog posts ,videos ,courses. Don’t expect to get the perfect mix in one song! Don’t spend hours and hours sitting in front of your speakers trying to fix each and every detail.S long as you continue recording and mixing new songs and you finish them,this is the best way to become better and better!
Maybe you have too many plugins (we are going to talk about this topic in an upcoming post) and you don’t know which one to use for vocals and you spend so many hours ,trying to find the best so you can get a perfect vocal track! I am not saying that you can’t have alternative options ,but you must decide fast and keep going!
Even if you are just starting out in your home studio,and let’s say you don;’t know how to start mixing ,you have to start from somewhere. This is the secret to become better in your home studio! Record and mix as many songs you can! Every day you will be better!
