Many times I talk with friends here at HomeStudioProject, but also with other musicians and we have the same concerns. How can I find time to do my music when there is so much to do during the day and generally during the week?
It's a general concern, which may not sound like mixing or recording, but productivity is a very important part of being able to be more creative and efficient in the free time we have at our disposal.
In today's post I will suggest some ways that will help you be more efficient. I will show you how you can properly plan your week to do more work in your home studio.
Many obligations
We all have during the week many obligations, work, family, personal or professional activities and in all this we try to find time to finish the song we have been working on for so long.
The first thing we need to do is make a schedule for the week we are going through or that is about to start. It is very important to plan our week before it starts.
Every Sunday afternoon, it would be good to write down what you have to do during the week. I know what you will think. "Since I know everything I have to do, why should I write them?" I will tell you why. First of all, when you write everything you have to do, then you have a better picture of your obligations and your wants.
So once you are done with your weekly to-do list, the best thing to do is plan ahead. How do you do that? Use an analog or digital calendar. Personally, I use a digital calendar and more specifically the Google calendar.

There are many digital calendars that you can use both on your computer and on your mobile phone since they synchronize with all devices.
With calendar you can put all your tasks and you can put how long each task lasts.
So once you add all the obligations of the week, you have a better idea of how much free time you have and how much time you can spend on your music.
For example, if you see that you have two free hours during the day, but you also need a little time to relax, then you can "close" one hour to work on your song.
Important: Plan what you will do. This time you enter your studio. Do not just close the time and say "I will work on the song" You must be specific what you will do. For example, if you have an hour on Monday night and an hour on Thursday night, then you should think about what you will do specifically and write it in the diary.
Write "Studio: Guitar Recording" and "Editing Voice". So you have planned your week properly. I have written before about how important it is to set deadlines for your songs and not to be left to the inspiration of the moment or just to waste time exploring some plugins or mixing in a song again, if you have done so.
By planning your week in the calendar, you have a much better idea of what you can do during the week and how much time you can really dedicate to your music. This way you become faster and more efficient.
If you do not have any time, then you can spend two hours on the weekend and you will definitely achieve much more than doing nothing and just having the excuse "I do not have any time at all”
Remember that you have to be specific what you will do every time you plan time for the studio.
Make a plan for how many hours you can finish a song and just put it in the diary. Set deadlines.
What I suggest: Do not find excuses! For example, if you only have evening hours and can not record vocals or guitars for your songs, think about what else you can do and schedule the weekend a couple of hours to record natural instruments or even to mix the speakers yours.
Productivity starts with very good planning. Make your schedule and then "book" hours for your music.
